Case Study: Optimizing the Performance of a Trim Sort System at a Beef Processing Facility TEC Systems Group Achieves Peak Performance and Increases Efficiencies

Overview and Customer’s Challenge

A beef processing facility had invested in a new third-party multimillion-dollar Trim Sort System and was not delivering the expected performance. The system’s technology was hindered by poor programming within the control system and HMI screen functionality. The original control system led to increased rework and out-of-specification product leading to reduced margins and production.

TEC Systems Group’s Solution

TEC Systems Group was asked to address these challenges and optimize the customer’s existing Trim Sort System. After a detailed observation of the system’s operation, we crafted a comprehensive plan to enhance its functionality. 

• Applied our algorithm for the Infeed Lean Adjustment System.
• Developed enhanced HMI graphics to provide improved visibility of clump weight, clump fat/lean percentage, clump location on the belt, and control of the process.
• Refined VFD Controls to control belt speed, clump timing, and bin retract timing.
• Provided documentation on how to calibrate and operate the Trim Sort Systems.

Customer’s Outcome

Our recommendations led to a significant improvement in the Trim Sort System’s performance. The system can now be accurately calibrated, clumping issues are resolved, and the amount of reclaim is reduced. The operators gained operational knowledge of the Trim Sort System and now have the ability to track the weight, fat percentage, and position on the belt for each individual clump. Our HMI screens have also provided them with the ability to control belt speed, clump timing, and bin retract timing. Overall, the client was excited about the return on investment from TEC Systems Group.
