Protect Workers and Reduce Downtime

Employers must provide control of hazardous energy sources to protect people performing work on their machinery, equipment or processes. Companies are required to implement lockout/tagout (LOTO) methods and procedures to prevent unexpected startup of the equipment or release of energy during servicing tasks.

Minor servicing activities may be suitable for alternative energy control methods that are as effective as LOTO and achieve acceptable risk. Safety in Automation (SiA) Strategies, a subsidiary of TEC Systems Group, works with companies to design alternative safety control systems that:

  • Protect workers in affected areas of machinery.
  • Lead to reduced downtime.

The prerequisites for deploying safe automated machines and systems are:

  • Risks must be identified.
  • Appropriate measures for minimizing risk need to be defined. – The measures’ effectiveness must be validated.

Available Services

SiA Strategies offers the following services to accomplish the necessary prerequisites:

Risk Assessment PROCESS Reporting
Design and Verification
Project Management and Validation

Risk Assessment Reporting

Engineers from SiA Strategies engage with plant management, machine operators and maintenance personnel to understand the tasks and hazards in use of the machine. The report deliverable contains:

  • Applicable regulations, directives and standards
  • Identification of hazard/task situations
  • Quantified risk evaluation
  • Specification of risk reduction requirements needed to achieve hazardous energy control

Design and Verification

SiA Strategies utilizes functional safety engineering practices to design and verify our alternative energy control methods to ensure our proposed systems achieve acceptable risk. We develop the electrical and mechanical drawings, select the appropriate hardware and software and create application programming for the risk reduction measures.

Project Management and Validation

SiA Strategies offers project management during the installation of the necessary hardware at the customer site. A validation plan is prepared and testing performed to ensure proper selection, installation, implementation and functioning of the safety-related parts of the control system.
