Can a high volume of control panels be manufactured and delivered to a customer with a quick turnaround for a fast-approaching deadline while staying on a budget?

That’s a challenge the TEC Systems Group’s control panel shop team faced when a manufacturer of household items tasked them with creating a solution to transform a BOM and a rough design into multiple fully functioning control panels.

John Whaley, TEC Systems Group’s Vice President of Business Development, says the project relied heavily on using economies of scale and revamped tooling processes to increase control panel output. TEC’s solution utilized project management to document, streamline, and define the construction process. That led to workflow enhancements within the organization’s control panel shop as well as efficiency gain found from its supply chain.

“New tools, processes, and procedures were developed prior to the panels’ construction,” Whaley says. We made these changes as a team to ensure they were widely accepted.”

Modifications included an expanded workspace in TEC’s panel shop that was dedicated to constructing higher-volume orders to allow for a high-volume assembly process. Quality control checkpoints were also added to ensure consistent quality within the increased production schedule. Whaley says new time-saving tools for layout and construction were also implemented to help TEC achieve the desired outcome for the customer.

TEC is utilizing a stand-alone, 9,000-square-foot facility to enhance the control panel shop’s capacities and efficiency. The company also obtained a UL 508A certification to help keep more work in-house and allow customers to meet regulatory compliance.

Whaley says the expanded control panel shop gives TEC more capacity for OEM projects and allows for more simultaneous production of products.

For TEC, the outcome was well worth the effort. The customer received all of its control panels a month ahead of schedule and in a single shipment.

Troy Todd, Director of Business Development for TEC Systems Group, says the successful completion of this project opens the door for additional work with this particular customer.

Additionally, that company also now has access to our local panel shop with scalable capabilities for future control panel needs. “We were awarded our first project (with this customer) in October 2022 and have done a couple of projects since then,” Todd says.
